Homeless Student Uniform Drive
They attend school, participate in class discussions and hand in their homework, but when the bell rings at the end of the school day, more than 500 Lancaster city school children don’t have a place to call home. Some of the families live in one of the city’s eight shelters. Others “double up” in friends and relatives’ homes; still others have no secure place to live.
“It’s a hidden population and we are trying to break the cycle of homelessness by keeping today’s homeless student in school through graduation,” states Ken Marzinko, SDoL’s, homeless student project facilitator.
We can help by providing at least some of the students, school uniforms when they go back to school this year.
It is often difficult to get the right sizes, type of pants/shirts/shorts so we will be collecting money in special envelopes from Sunday, August 22 through and including Sunday, September 5, 2010. At that time Social Outreach will be in contact with the Homeless Project at the School District of Lancaster and get specific uniforms (sizes) to buy for specific homeless children.
The average school uniform costs $20 and we would like to help at least 75 homeless children have two uniforms a piece to start off the new school year. That’s a goal of $3000 dollars for this effort. There will be updates in the Church Bulletin as to our progress and if you have further questions or want to help shop in August please contact Doug Hopwood or any member of Social Outreach.
This year more than ever, if it is possible to do so, please contribute to this drive, we anticipate an enormous number of inquiries and needs once that opening bell rings for a new school year. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
